Hi All,

In addition to the entry that Dave has written, I thought I would also add some photo documentation of what we have been up to.

Here is Dave and I just about to leave for the airport. We really had no idea what we were doing or what we were in for. Yet so hopeful.

Here is our first night in Munich. The waitress in the background spoke no English and we had only our German phrase book to guide us. Fortunately it is understood in Germany that when you sit a table in a restaurant, somebody will bring you a beer.

Oktoberfest was obviously off the hook. In the picture on the bottom, we are seated about mid-way through a giant building. Just one of many.

This is Prague. It is beautiful. We stayed there for about 5 days and totally fell in love. In the bottom picture we are sipping wine at a winery located at the top of a giant hill, overlooking the city.

While in Prague we heard about renting mo-peds. It really was the best way to explore the city - that is after we got used to the crazy driving in the Czech Republic.

And here we are in the Prague train station about to board for Berlin. We are yet to take any pictures here but that will soon change! More to come.

Hello my gangsters, Dave here.

As Sarah mentioned above, we find ourselves back in Germany.  Berlin to be specific.  It smells like food here, all the time, everywhere I go.  It's nice, because the food is cheap - and the beer is cheaper.  Yesterday I was paying 1.20 Euros per 500 mL bottle of Beck's, and I was told I was being ripped off.  Oh what a feeling.

The luxurious life we were living in Prague seems to be over.  Instead of sharing a private mansion of a room, Sarah and I are bunking with strangers.  But it's probably for the best.  Now we're being forced into meeting other people, and that's been good.  Last night we shot shit with a fella from Frankfurt and a guy from Turkey for most of the evening.  We spoke mostly of our cultural differences, but there are plenty of similarities too.  These guys know everything about our pop culture.  Weird.  Then we met some fellow canucks.  Being able to vent about the weirdness of being in such a different place was a sigh of relief.  They're brothers from BC, and really funny guys.  We may go out on the town to party with them tonight.

Mostly I'm learning about how ridiculously expensive everything in Canada is, and how needlessly strict a lot of our laws and customs are.  Europeans find our drinking in public laws insane, and I can't blame them.  Even though everybody walks around with beer here, I see fewer drunken stumblies walking around than I do in Halifax.  I haven't figured that one out yet.

Anyway, the 'Y' key on the keyboard here is where the 'Z' key lies at home, and it's starting to tilt me.  So I'm ending this now.  Besides, I have to go see about a wall.

-Dave

Hello all,

Hopefully this blog will post, the website is totally in German and I am yet to figure out how to change that. That's right folks, we are back in Deutschland! We landed in Berlin this afternoon and staying here for a least a few days.We are staying in an area of town which much resembles that of home. It is filled with punks and hipsters and while people are still drinking in the streets, the level of drunkeness is nowhere near that of Munich. The food is also fantastic, so many more options than meat and potatoes, and some of the menus are even in English!

Can't really talk too much, Dave is outside waiting on the street with a bottle of beer. Will keep you all updated soon!

Love Sarah

Munich and Prague

Hello everyone! Welcome to our blog. Here we will write many interesting things that will be sure to make you all jealous. We started our journey 6 days ago when we boarded a flight to London. The flight was only 5 hours but it seemed like much longer. It was an overnight flight but we did not get much sleep. The London airport for me was a blur. I could barely keep my eyes open and our plane to Munich was delayed. The rest of the people boarding the plane however was ready to go. Oktoberfest had started and people were in full force. Our flight to Munich was pretty short, about two hour. When we got off the plane we were pretty awake and had no idea what to do. We took a very terrifying and expensive cab ride to our hotel and crashed for several hours. Our night was pretty relaxed, we ate at a German resturant and understood nothing on the menu. It didn't seem to matter however, as all German food seems to be meat and potatoes.

The next day we got up early and started to head into the city. The train station was nuts. Everyone was drinking beer and I actually saw a guy polish off a bottle of Jack Daniels on the train. All before noon. the festival itself was far larger than either of us had expected. Each brewery had its own giant building that was packed with people and beer. There must have been close to 20 in all. Another thing I did not expect were all the carnival rides. There was everything I could think of including at least 3 roller coasters. Most of the rides looked like ones that would just make you dizzy (which seems like the wost idea at Oktoberfest) so Dave and I opted for the tower of terror. Once 4:00 rolled around the place was out of control. There were lineups everywhere and it looked like finding a place to sit was impossible. We booted it home and drank our own beer in the hotel.

The next day we had our first Eurorail experience and it went pretty well. We arrived at the train station just early enough to get our pass validated and to grab a bite to eat in the CocaCola lounge. Our sandwiches had lettuce and tomato on it - the first sign of vegtables we saw in the country. Our train was nice and our ride was actually enjoyable. We arrrived in Prague as sunlight was diminishing. We had no place to stay and almost everywhere was full for the night, as it was a Saturday. We finally scored the last two beds in a 6 bed dorm. We shared this dorm with 4 other boys who came from England to drink and party in Prague. Dave and I were out pretty early, but awoken in the middle of the night (or very early in the morning) but the boys who had just come back and weren't done partying. The turned on the music and opened the beer and wine. Dave and I saw nothing else we could do at this point but join them. One by one they all passed out and we thought we could finally get some sleep, but the snoring was louder than I've ever heard. Finally around 7am we booted it downstairs to join the other early risers for breakfast. We were scrambling to find a place to stay for the following night so we could get some sleep but no one would take us in until noon. Finally we found a great spot who would at least take our bags so we could manage touring around the city without aching backs.

We are spending our third night and final night in this place tonight. They upgraded us to a huge 4 person, private room so we could be close to the other Canadians. So far we have fallen in love with Prague. Never have I seen a city so beautiful. We have spent so much time wondering around getting lost just to explore. Also since the average income here is pretty low, things are affordable. The Czech food is still a lot of meat and potatoes but there are so many other options. We will be sad to leave this place but tomorrow we board the train to Berlin! More stories about that to come.

Much love,

Sarah
